The Mystic Vibe Guide: the benefits of Vetiver Essential Oil

Vetiver essential oil, also called khus oil comes from the vetiver plant. Vetiver, first documented in the 12th century, is native to India and can grow more than 6 ft tall. People have been known to eat the vetiver plant when trying to manage stomach pain, nerve and circulation problems and joint relief. The oil, however, is distilled from the vetiver plant’s roots. The root is first aged and then soaked in water. The highly concentrated oil releases in the water and is skimmed off the top.

Vetiver oil is very fragrant and has a distinctive sharp, woody, smoky or earthy aroma that is often used in men’s cologne. It is a preferred essential oil to use in Ayurvedic treatment and spiritual practices due to its healing and grounding properties. Due to the calming and relaxing aroma that vetiver offers, it is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy. In Hindu cultures, it is referred to as the “Oil of tranquility”. It has a deep connection to our nervous system and believed to have a direct effect on our subconscious mind. It has been reported to enhance our dreams and help us connect to our Higher Self in meditation. You can also rub it on the soles of your feet or behind the ears for a restful and rejuvenating nights sleep.

Some of the benefits to using vetiver essential oil are below:

·         Improved sleep and breathing patterns to aid in delta or theta brain waves to induce REM sleep.

·         Calms anxiety and overthinking.

·         Anecdotally, it is used in aromatherapy as treatment for ADHD.

Add drops to a diffusor for an effective aromatherapy agent. Inhale pure vetiver oil to get all the benefits of this special essential oil. You can also use vetiver oil topically to the skin by adding a few drops to your favorite carrier oil (I love jojoba and coconut oil) or skin cream.
